Ira Levin gave his extremely successful debut as conductor, pianist and arranger in Berlin's Philharmonic Hall in November of 2013 with the Berlin Symphony.
Following his highly acclaimed conducting of Wagner's "Lohengrin" and two symphonic concerts at the legendary Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires in September and October of 2011, he was immediately invited back to conduct Enescu's monumental "Oedipe" there in May of 2012, the first staged performances of that important opera in all of the Americas. The huge success of that led to his being appointed as the principal guest conductor of the Colón, conducting three operas, and concerts, each season. His 2013 season included a very well received production of Rachmaninoff's "Aleko" and "Francesca da Rimini", a triumphant "Die Frau ohne Schatten" by Richard Strauss, both with rave reviews in Argentina, Germany and Austria, and concluded brilliantly with Verdi's "Un Ballo in Maschera" in December. In April 2014 at the Colón, he conducted the successful American premiere of Detlev Glanert's celebrated opera "Caligula" as well as as two concert programs with the Buenos Aires Philharmonic, also playing a piano concerto by Mozart. He will return in 2014 for productions of "Idomeneo" and "Madama Butterfly" and a further program with the Philharmonic. He will return to the Theatro Municipal in Sao Paulo, where he was the artistic and music director from 2001-2005, in 2014 to conduct new productions of Mascagni's "Cavalleria Rusticana" and Leoncavallo's "Pagliacci".
His 2010 recording with the London Symphony of works by Michael Colina, which received rave reviews, was followed by the September 2012 release of a second CD with the London Symphony of music by Colina, both on Fleur de Son Classics and distributed by Naxos. He will record Colina's "Requinauts", a major choral work, with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Chorus in January of 2014.
His 2006 recording of the fascinating 1899 edition of Bruckner's Sixth Symphony with the Symphony Orchestra of Norrlands Opera, the first since 1952, will be followed by the release in 2014 of the world premiere recording of the 1892 edition of the Second Symphony with the same forces.
His 2010 orchestration of Busoni's monumental piano work, "Fantasia Contrappuntistica", published at the end of 2010 by Edition Tilli, was followed by a new orchestration in 2011 of Liszt's "Fantasia and Fugue on the theme BACH", in honor of the Liszt bicentennial. These works have been performed in Germany, Finland, Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. His orchestration of Franck's Piano Quintet was published in 2012 and will have it's world premiere with the Helsinki Philharmonic under the direction of Leif Segerstam in 2014. His recent orchestrations of four Rachmaninoff works was published in January, 2014 and he conducted their world premiere with the Buenos Aires Philharmonic at the Teatro Colón in April, 2014.
Edition Tilli completed publishing the series of his transcriptions for piano solo and cadenzas to Mozart concertos in 2013. Levin's recordings of many his piano works can now be heard on You Tube, along with the scores. Click here to see them.
